Originally inspired by The Washington Post feature, “Life is Short: Autobiography as Haiku,” students write memoirs in 100 words or fewer. This lesson teaches students to “show” themselves in vivid details and carefully chosen words. The lesson has recently been updated to include Google slides and instructional YouTube videos for guided practice! In pre-writing activities, students journal about life experiences.

We asked Strohm a few questions about his different approach to memoir and how he felt about excavating the type of personal material many tend to shun. A few years ago, however, a friend of mine, Paul Strohm, wrote a memoir consisting of 100 100-word stories. 'Thank you so much for putting together this writing course. It was of good value to me as it got me started thinking more deeply about my characters. I don't have a lot of time to write, working two jobs, but I am doing the ten-minute exercise with each lesson, and each evening, trying to get in the habit of sitting myself down to write... I would recommend the course to anyone.'
