Create a backup

1Password is one of the most highly recommended password managers and the developers are constantly updating the service and apps with new features and functionality. The first update for the 1Password iOS app in 2021, includes an important security fix that stops a proxy server on your computer from seeing your email address during authentication.

Open 1Password and choose File > Backup.

To find where the backup files are kept, choose 1Password > Preferences > Backups and click Show Files.

Restore a backup

1. 1Password automatically creates backups of the standalone vaults on your Mac or Windows PC every day if there have been any changes made since the last backup. This includes vaults you’re syncing with Dropbox or iCloud. If you’re syncing with Dropbox or iCloud, a copy of your data is also stored separately with Dropbox or iCloud.

3. Click your device in iTunes. Get help if you can’t find it.
4. Click File Sharing in the sidebar, then select 1Password in the list of apps.
5. Select the Backups folder from the 1Password Documents list and click “Save”.
6. Find the folder on your computer to which you want to copy the files and click “Save” or “Select folder”.

1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.

2. Connect your iOS device to your computer using the USB cable that came with your device. If you see “Trust This Computer?” on your iOS device, tap Trust.

3. Click your device in iTunes. Get help if you can’t find it.

4. Click File Sharing in the sidebar, then select 1Password in the list of apps.

5. Drag a Backups folder or .1p4_zip file from a folder or window on your computer onto the 1Password Documents list to copy it to your device.

   You can also click Add in the 1Password Documents list in iTunes, find a Backups folder you want to copy from your computer, and then click Add.

   If iTunes asks you to replace the existing Backups folder, click Replace.

6. Open and unlock 1Password on your iOS device, then tap Settings > Advanced > Restore Backup and follow the onscreen instructions.

Restore a backup

1. Create a folder called 1Password.opvault on your desktop:
   1. Right-click your desktop and choose New > Folder.
   2. Name the folder 1Password.opvault.
2. Open Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%1PasswordBackups to search, then press Enter. You’ll see a list of folders, one for each vault 1Password has backed up.
3. Open the folder for the vault you want to restore. You’ll see a list of .zip files with names corresponding to the date and time of each backup.
4. Right-click the .zip file you want to restore and choose Extract All.
5. Click Browse, choose the 1Password.opvault folder on your desktop, and click Select Folder.
6. Click Extract. If you see “There is already a file with the same name as the folder name you specified”, contact 1Password Support.

To add the vault to your existing 1Password data, open 1Password and choose 1Password > “Open vault on this PC”.

To replace all your existing 1Password data:

1. Open 1Password. You don’t need to enter your Master Password.

   1. Click the Startmenu.
   2. Click the 1Password icon .

2. Choose Help > Troubleshooting > Reset All 1Password Data and follow the onscreen instructions.

3. Open 1Password and choose “Sync using folder” on the welcome screen.

Exporting your data to an OPVault folder requires Dropbox, WLAN Server, or local folder sync.

1. Open and unlock 1Password.
2. Tap Settings > Advanced > “Export primary vault”.

Your 1Password data will be saved to a folder named 1PasswordExports in local storage on your device.

Set up AutoFill

Before you can use 1Password to fill and save your information, you’ll need to set up 1Password on your device. Then follow these steps:

1. On the Home screen, tap Settings.
2. Tap Passwords > AutoFill Passwords.
3. Turn on AutoFill Passwords.
4. Select 1Password.

From now on, you’ll be able to fill and save passwords, without ever opening the 1Password app.

Tip

To stop iCloud Keychain from asking to save your passwords, deselect iCloud Keychain. Then you’ll always know passwords are saved in 1Password, without any confusion.

Fill and save passwords

To fill or save a password, visit a website in Safari or open an app, and tap a username or password field. If you have a Login saved for the website or app, you’ll see your username above the keyboard. If not, you’ll see Passwords.

To fill a Login, tap your username above the keyboard. If you have more than one Login for the website or app, tap to choose a different one.

Save a Login

If you already have a username and password for the website, tap , then tap Create Login. Enter your details, then tap Save & Fill.

If you don’t have a username and password for the website, tap , then tap Create Login. Enter a username, then tap Generate New Password to automatically create a strong password. If a website has specific password requirements, tap Show Password Recipe and adjust length, digits, and symbols. When you’re done, tap Save & Fill.

To change where Logins are saved, open 1Password, tap Settings > Vaults > All Vaults > Vault for Saving, and choose a vault.

Get help

AutoFill requires 1Password 7.2 or later.

If you can’t use Touch ID or Face ID with AutoFill, open the 1Password app and enter your Master Password to unlock it.

If you have a Login item in 1Password that doesn’t appear when you try to fill:

• in an app, tap Passwords to see all your Login items and choose the one you want to fill.
• in Safari, you may need to edit the item to make sure its website field matches the website.

If you recently changed an item on another device and the change isn’t appearing when you attempt to fill, open and unlock 1Password to sync your changes.

If you’re an iOS app developer, set up your app’s associated domains.
