The Dawn redwood Tree, Metasequoia glyptostroboides Species, is the only extant (not extinct) species left in the genus Metasequoia.This tree is a deciduous coniferous species, and is classed as a softwood. The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Species is one of three tree species known as Redwood, see the Coast Redwood or California Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), and the Giant. The branches of the bald cypress are not opposite and the leaves are somewhat pointy while the foliage of Metasequoia is more rounded. Scientific classification Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu & Cheng 1948. It is the only species in the genus Metasequoia S. Miki 1941, at that time only known from fossils. The Metasequoia (Dawn redwood) Genus currently only contains one extant species, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, also known as the Dawn Redwood Tree. The other four species of Metasequoia are extinct. These species are all fast growing, deciduous conifers trees. Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng is the only species in the genus Metasequoia Miki ex Hu et Cheng, which belongs to the Cupressaceae family. There were around 10 species in the Metasequoia genus, which were widely spread across the Northern Hemisphere during the Cretaceous of the Mesozoic and in the Cenozoic.
